'll be back with us. he's joining us from ohio. as we mention both mitt romney and president obama are campaigning in ohio today. and believe it or not today's big issue in the presidential race is big bird. cnn's national political correspondent jim acosta reports from iowa right now where romney held a rally earlier in the day. jim. >> reporter: wolf, the romney campaign is clearly feeling good, but at the same time top advisors are trying to downplay the importance of a slew of new polls showing the gop nominee now in a real horse race with president obama in a sign that all of this has gotten the president's attention. this campaign has suddenly turned into a race over small things or rather one big bird. plowing into his proposals to help american farmers, mitt romney had poultry on his mind in iowa. of the eight-foot and yellow variety as he accused the president of fouling up the nation's weak recovery. >> you have to scratch your head when the president spends the last week talking about saving big bird. i actually think we need to have a president who talks about saving th

both before and after the debate and nationally in gallup's daily tracking poll which covers october 2nd through the 8th, mitt romney now holds a two point edge. today, gallup shifted from registered to likely voters, which tends to favor republicans. that said, though, it is hard to find any evidence, any evidence that president obama escaped denver without at least some damage. the only question being how severe and how long-lasting. that seems hard to dispute. just as it's hard to dispute that prior to the debate, mr. romney was getting hammered in the polls. keeping them honest though, disputing or downplaying the obvious, that's what campaigns do on both sides. >> it's not going to be about the polls. >> i wouldn't put a lot of weight in any of these national polls for the next cuouple days. >> in terms of mitt romney surging, just remember how much of a deficit he had to make up. he was in some cases double digits behind the president in all those attributes. >> pull back the reins. >> the media is focusing on one poll. >> that's reaction to the recent batch of polling, including

moderate tone. i am elated by it, carol. it happens on both sides of the aisle. we're seeing a multi-dimensional mitt romney. we had seen the businessman, the fix-up artist. we had not seen the guy, the father, the human, the friend. we're seeing a will the more of that. it's helping. he had to do it. he had a huge gap. my question is, what took you so long? they're a great influence on him. we've known, we've heard that ann range of motiomney is calle stabilizer, very close family, close couple. the more of this mitt we see the better. conservatives will be fine with it and are fine with it. at his stump events you're seeing thousands and thousands and thousands of people. that's the base that's showing up. look, if we win, if we can win, we don't care if it's the moderate or conservative, which one it is. we want mitt romney. we don't want president obama reelected. >> wait. i thought things were shifting, at least some conservative analysts were saying it's shifting, like tess no longer republican voters just want to vote against obama, now they're really starting to like mitt rom
